MONASTERY
Saint Macarius the Great Monastery
Wadi El-Natrun · Coptic Orthodox

A brief history
This monastery traces its origins to the fourth-century community of Saint Macarius. A major revival began in 1969, when Father Matta al-Miskin, known as Matthew the Poor, arrived with twelve monks. They restored endangered buildings and developed new living and working spaces.
An interesting detail
A printing press installed in 1978 supported the monastery’s Saint Mark magazine and books in Arabic and other languages, connecting desert monastic life with distant readers.
