History: Stavros tou Agiasmati Church

Stavros tou Agiasmati, the Church of the Holy Cross of Agiasmati, belongs to Platanistasa, a village at about 940 metres on the northern side of the Troodos, in the Pitsilia region. It is one of the ten Painted Churches in the Troodos Region inscribed together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. UNESCO singles out its late-fifteenth-century paintings for combining Byzantine art harmoniously with the local painting tradition, with some elements of Western influence.

An interesting detail

Platanistasa was among the villages granted in 1474 to a relative of Catherine Cornaro, Queen of Cyprus.
