History: Church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour (Agia Sotira)

The Church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour, also called Agia Sotira tou Soteros, is a sixteenth-century church in Palaichori Oreinis, in the Nicosia District. Its wall paintings belong to the Cretan school of the sixteenth century. In 2001 UNESCO added it to the Painted Churches in the Troodos Region, the World Heritage Site first inscribed with nine churches in 1985. Like the other Troodos churches, it has a steep-pitched wooden roof covered with tiles, a feature particular to Cyprus.

An interesting detail

It was the last of the ten churches to join the World Heritage listing, sixteen years after the first nine.
