History: Monastery of Saint John Lampadistis

Saint John Lampadistis at Kalopanagiotis is the monastery among UNESCO’s ten painted churches of the Troodos. Its wall paintings span several periods: work of the 13th century, the early years of Latin rule; 14th-century paintings showing both local and Western influences; and, in the north chapel, Italo-Byzantine painting of the Venetian period that began in 1489.

An interesting detail

UNESCO counts the paintings of its north chapel among the most sophisticated examples of the Italo-Byzantine school, a fusion of Italian Renaissance and Byzantine art.
